Viagra, is a brand name well-known for the drug Sildenafil citrate. It is also sold under the name Ravatio and Cavertia in few places across the world. It is developed, produced and marketed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. The prime competitors of Pfizer in the market are tadalafil (Cialis) and Vardenafil (Levitra). The main purpose for the production of this drug is to treat male erectile dysfunction (ED or impotence) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Initially Viagra was not intended to treat ED. In the late 1990s it was formed to cure a form of heart disease called angina pectoris. As it did not work that purpose and showed few signs of consistent erections. It was then that the drug was patented in 1996 and approved for the treatment of ED. ED is a common complaint in men, which occurs due to several factors. Many of the causes can be due to psychological reasons whereas few causes can be due to physiological disorders. The list also includes dyspepsia (indigestion), palpitations (irregular, rapid pulsation of the heart) and photophobia (abnormal fear of light). In few cases there are reports of blurred vision and in very rare cases temporary blindness is found.
